Computer donation helps Cranston West go 'Geek'

Cranston High School West celebrated the arrival of 50 computers recently that were donated by local organization Free Geek Providence. On March 22, school leaders and community members gathered to recognize the contribution.
Cranston Mayor Allan Fung, Johnson & Wales Providence President Dr. Irving Schneider, Superintendent Peter Nero and Free Geek Providence founder Nathan Hutnak were all on hand to speak. Mayor Fung commended the donation in light of recent fiscal challenges, and said it would provide “life skills for generations to come.”
As a former Cranston West student, the event was especially personal to Free Geek’s Nate Hutnak. He called his years at Cranston West “three of his best,” but calls the large donation “a small example of what [Free Geek] tries to do on a daily basis.”
Free Geek Providence formed in 2008 as an independent branch of the original Free Geek in Oregon, with a mission to help local schools and families access technology, to recycle electronics responsibly, and to educate the community.
